Day off

It's fabulous to have a day off and relax...

Although we are going to several stores to buy new furniture to our home office. Hopefully we'll find everything we need today. I have to empty and clean the room first and it's quite a job...

Tosin ensin pitäisi tyhjentää ja siivota työhuone ja tehdä kierros eri liikkeissä ostamassa uudet kalusteet huoneeseen. Toivottavasti löydämme yhdellä kertaa kaiken tarpeellisen.

Monogram cabinet knobs

I am planning to do some changes in our home office, don't know yet what kind of cabinets to buy, but I am already tempted to buy monogram knobs, they are adorable! Monogram knobs you can find at Cool Tiles; Anthropologie, The Find.

Olen suunnitellut muutamia muutoksia työhuoneeseemme. En tiedä vielä millaiset kaapistot hankkisimme, mutta olen ihastunut monogrammivetimiin, joilla voisi tuunata kaapistot. Niitä myyvät ainakin Cool Tiles, Anthropologie, The Find. Ainakin Anthropologie lähettää myös Suomeen, tosin lähetyskulut ovat melko kalliit tuotteen hintaan nähden.

The printing cylinder light is finally ready

Our printing cylinder light is finally ready and in use!

I saw vintage printing cylinders for sale at Fishs Eddy already on last day of our spring 2008 trip to New York, but did not have money left nor room in my luggage.

When we did arrive in New York the next time on July 2009, I was determined to buy a cylinder if they still existed. I looked around in the shop and finally found few undea a desk, it cost abt 130 USD. Cylinder is abt 40 cm tall and weights 7 kg. Poor Husband had to carry it home.

We had a carpenter to make the wooden base and top (almost as expensive as the cylinder). To find a modern big lamp shade was a challenge. Did not find many separate lamp shades without the buing the whole lamp and they were too small and mostly quite ugly. I asked how much would  a custom shade cost; about 170-200 EUR... Too much.

Finally we found a ready made shade in a deparment store, they had a return of broken lamp and the shade was perfect; just the right size and shape and only 25 EUR! Then we only needed electric parts to make it work and a piece of steel pipe and to put it all together.

I love it, it looks as good as I imagined.

Painosylinterivalaisimemme on vihdoin valmis ja käytössä.

Näin vanhoja painosylintereitä jo kevään 2008 New Yorkin -matkamme viimeisen aamuna Fishs Eddy-liikkessä, mutta rahat olivat jo vähissä ja laukut täynnä.

Seuraavalla matkallamme heinäkuussa 2009 halusin heti tarkistaa  olisiko sylintereitä vielä jäljellä ja löysinkin muutaman pölyisen nurkasta myyntitiskin alta. Sylinteri maksoi 130 USD, on noin 40 cm korkea ja painaa 7 kg.  Siippa-raukka sai kantaa sen hotelliin, koneeseen ja kotiin.

Puuseppä sorvasi sylinterin ylä- ja alareunaan mahonkiset holkit (miltei yhtä kallista kuin sylinteri), jotka lakkasimme.

Varjostimen löytäminen oli varsin haastavaa, valmiina irtonaisina löytyvät olivat väärän kokoisia, mallisia ja suorastaan rumia. Teettäminen olisi maksanut 170-200 EUR!

Lopulta löysimme tavaratalon poistohyllytä vain 25 EUR maksavan varjostimen. Valaisin oli palautettu rikkinäisenä, mutta varjostin oli ehjä ja meille juuri oikean kokoinen ja mallinen. Sitten tarvittiinkin enää sähköistys, metalliholkki ja kasaus.

Valaisin on ihana, juuri sellainen kuin kuvittelinkin siitä tulevan.

Millinery hat brim molds

 

 I  have wanted to buy vintage different millinery wood hat brim molds and make a collage of them on wall, but unfortunately our walls are quite full already...Vintage ones are often available at ebay and new ones can be found for example here.

Olen ajatellut ostaa erilaisia vanhoja puisia hattumuotteja ja tehdä niistä kollaasin seinälle, mutta vapaa seinätila alkaa olla melko vähissä... Vanhoja hattumuotteja myydään usein ebayssa, uusia esim. täällä.

Lonnymag

Found a newish online interior/lifestyle magazine Lonnymag. Writer also has a blog M.A. Belle. Love the great pictures and interesting articles in the magazine. Issue 1 can be found here.

Jewellery rack

I had problems to store my neglaces and bracelets, mostly semiprecious stones and sterling silver, until I bought these Ikea racks. Now most of my jewellery is neatly stored behind bedroom door.

Minulla alkoi olla ongelmia korujen (enimmäkseen puolijalokiviä ja hopeaa) säilyttämisesssä, kunnes ostin nämä Ikean naulakot. Nyt kaula- ja rannekorut riippuvat siististi makuuhuoneen oven takana.

Winter lights

 We have had these light on window for few years. "Our printing cylinder to lamp" project is finally almost ready and the new lamp will replace thse lights. Pictures of the lamp project later on when the lamp is ready.

Meillä on ollut nämä valot ikkunalla muutaman vuoden jo. Projektimme "painosylinteristä valaisimeksi" alkaa vihdoin valmistua. Kuvat lamppuprojektista ilmestyvät blogiin kun valaisin viimein on valmis.

Yet another commercial sign

This old Maggi commercial we bought in Berlin few years ago. We had just visited a wonderful, but very expensive antique store specialized only in enamel signs and ols tins. Coud not afford anything there! Soon after we passed a junk shop, popped in and found this quite large sign for abt. 30 EUR. It made a good souvenier and reminds us of yet another great trip.

Tämän vanhan petisen Maggin mainoskyltin löysimme Berliinistä muutama vuosi sitten. Olimme juuri käyneet upeassa, vanhoja erittäin kalliita emaloituja kylttejä ja peltipurkkeja myyvässä antiikkiliiikkeessä, josta emme hintojen takia raaskineet ostaa mitään. Muutaman minuutin päästä ohitimme rojukaupan, johon menimme sisään ja löysimme tämän melko kookkaan kyltin noin 30 eurolla. Tämä matkamuisto muistuttaa meitä jälleen yhdestä onnistuneesta matkasta.

Let's bake!

A dear friend gave me these old cake molds she had received from a retired bakery owner. I love the forms. These molds would of course still be good for baking, but I have used them as decoration.

Rakas ystäväni antoi nämä kakkumuotit minulle lahjaksi. Hän oli saanut ne jo aiemmin eläkkeelle jääneeltä leipomon omistajalta. Näillä voisi tietysti edelleen leipoa, mutta olen käyttänyt näitä vain koristeina ja ihaillut niiden hienoja muotoja.

Warm luxury mohair for fall

These delicious looking plush and warm handmade mohair shawls are sold at Villisilkki for 190 EUR/pc. They are made by Finnish textile artists Lena Rewell, who has made the same mohair shawls and throws also for international well known luxury brands.

Commercial sign no 1

 

I bought this vintage alcohol  store glass sign (maybe from 40's or 50's) abt. ten years ago on Kasvihuoneilmiö in Sammatti, Finland for 400 FIM= 65 EUR. Now it probably would cost close to 200 EUR, although it's hard to tell; I haven't seen them on sale after that there or anywhere else.

This sign is hanging above our bedroom door.

Kasvihuonilmiö had some nice, real vintage items for sale back then, but unfortunately they have lately sold mostly Chinese reproduction item which don't suit my taste.

This was the first old commercial sign I purchased, but I and Husband have expanded our collection quite much ever since...

Hotel Haven lobby bar

Hotel Haven on Unioninkatu is one of the newest hotels in Helsinki. It's stylish boutique hotel in the heart of city and is memeber of The Small Luxury Hotels of The World chain. I have heard that their rooms are excellent and service very good.

They have an upscale bar which was almost full on Friday night, but still quiet and serene. Sat there for a good while and enjoyed the atmosphere, company of friends and of course our coctails.

Salutoget bar

 I have been to Salutorget few times for coffee and wanted to return for cocktails, last weekend we met friends in their bar for drinks. The bar is stylish and it was full on Friday night.

What they are missing is a signature cocktail list. However the bartender asked what I liked; sweet or sour, short or tall and mixed me a nice tall, sour cocktail.

Also their bathroom is very roomy and looks classy, it's built in old bolt.

Vintage bus route sign

I have wanted a vintage bus route sign since I saw one several montsh ago (maybe last year) in Australian home and  interior magazine Inside Out. They look cool in their vintage/industrial way. Thie first one is on sale in online shop Paris Hotel Boutique. The other picture is from blog Deside to Inspire.

Unfortunately my walls are so full of other vintage signs and art, so there is no room for these. Will post photos of my signs later on.

... you are like me. But, there are other uses for yarn. This interesting lamp is in Tertti mansion. I was in a wedding reception there in August. Wonderful place; full of antique, vintage and innovative conversation pieces and good, beautifully arranged food!

New York stores

New York has huge variety of speaciality stores.



Fishs Eddy on Broadway/19th street has their own designs and a good variety of vintage plates, they also have vintage printing cylinders and rubber glove molds that make interesting home decorations and conversation pieces.




A Red Hook garden center had a great commercial truck.





There are several interesting antique stores on Atlantic Avenue, Boerum Hill in Brooklyn.




6th Avenue and side streets from around 30th to 35th are a beader's paradise.




The Upper Rust on 9th street new Thomson Square Park in East Village has interesting mix vintage and new pieces.
