Hotels I have liked

I usually try to get a nice accommodation for a reasonable price. For this reason I rarely have stayed in five star hotels, but have managed to catch many good deals in four star hotels. Yes, I would always love to stay in five star properties, but unfortunately my budget doesn't usually allow that. Anyway I usually travels to big cities, rarely use any other services hotels provide besides accommodation so good location, and nice clean rooms for a good rate are good enough for me. I rather spend rest of my holiday budget in lovely dinners, good shoppig and sightseeing.

Yritän lomamatkoille löytää mukavan hotellin kohtuuhintaan. Tästä syystä olen harvoin majoittunut viiden tähden hotelleihin, mutta olen löytänyt monia hyviä neljän tähden hotelleja hyvin hinnoin. Tottakai haluaisin aina asua viiden tähden hotelleissa, mutta budjettini ei yleensä salli sitä. Harvoin myöskää käytän majoituksen lisäksi muita hotellin palveluita. Suurissa kaupungeissa syön ja juon muualla kuin hotellissa ja järjestän kuljetukset ja nähtävyyksien katselut itse.  Loput matkabudjetistani käytän hyvään ruokaan, ostoksiin ja nähtävyyksiin.

I was to Dusit Hua Hin in Thailand years ago. I really liked the hotel on a quiet beach (or at least back then it was quiet and peaceful), excellent service and their riding stables.

En ole vuosiin ollut rantalomalla, mutta Hua Hinin Dusit-hotellissa asuin vuosia sitten. Pidin hotellista rauhallisella rannalla (tai ainkin silloin vielä ranta oli rauhallinen), hyvästä palvelusta ja hotellin omasta ratsastustallista.

 

We spent our honeymoon in San Francisco, Napa Valley and Las Vegas. In San Francisco we stayed the first days in stylish Pan Pacific Hotel, now called The Donatello. I used Hotwire for the first time and managed to get us a room for 90 dollars.

Häämatkallamme olimme San Francisossa, Napa Valleyssa sekä Las Vegasissa. San Franciscossa asuimme aluksi tyylikkäässä Pan Pacific-hotellissa, jonka nimi nykyisin on The Donatello. Käytimme Hotwireä ensimmäisen kerran ja olimme todella innoissmme saadessamme tuosta hotellista huoneen 90 dollarilla.

 The last days of our honeymoon in San Francisco we stayed in Westin St. Francis, a  San Francisco landmark, another great Hotwire deal. Very nice traditional hotel, very different from Hotel California around the corner where I had stayed ten years earlier.

Häämatkan viimeiset päivät asuimme perinteikkäässä Westin St. Francis-hotellissa San Franciscon Union Squarella. Hyvin miellyttävä hotelli, kovin erilainen kuin Hotel California nurkan takana, jossa olin asunut kymmenen vuotta aiemmin.

 

Hudson hotel in New York offers trendy accommodation designed by Philippe Starck. We stayed for nine nights; never felt claustrofobic, even though rooms are tiny, they are also cleverly designed. We liked location next to Columbus Circle and the roof terrace.

New Yorkin Hudson-hotelli on Philippe Starckin suunnittelema. Asuimme siellä yhdeksän yötä vuonna 2007. Huoneet olivat hyvin pieniä, mutta fiksusti suunniteltuja; kaksi henkeä ja kaikki tavaramme mahtuivat hyvin huoneeseen. Pidimme hotellin sijainnista Columbus Circlen vieressä ja etenkin hotellin kattoterassista.

Another New York favorite was Hilton Garden Inn Tribeca. It was not the best hotel I have stayed, but for the low Priceline bid we made it was a true find. Great location in Tribeca, far enough from Times Square craziness, but still nearby hundreds of wonderful restaurants and shops. Newish hotel with subway stop right under the hotel, quite spacisous rooms and very pleasant staff.

Toinen New Yorkin suosikkihotelimme oli Hilton Garden Inn Tribeca, jossa asuime viime kesänä.  Se ei ole paras hotelli, jossa olen koskaan asunut, mutta edullinen hinta Pricelinen kautta teki tästä hotellista todellisen löydön. Loistava sijainti Tribecassa; tarpeeksi kaukana Times Squaren tungoksesta, mutta lähellä satoja mielenkiintoisia ravintoloita ja kauppoja. Uudehko hotelli, metroasema suoraan hotellin alapuolella, tilavahkot huoneet ja miellyttävä henkilökunta.

I was placed in Grand Hotel Minerva on my first trip to Italian fairs. I loved the stylish Florence hotel and was really happy that I could stay in wonderful hotels during business trips. Well, the rude wake up call came the next day when I had to stay in horrible minus one star hotel somewhere in ourskirts of Milan. Even the bathroom was so dirty and nasty, that I had to take a shower with my socks on...

Ensimmäisellä messumatkallani Italiassa asuin Grand Hotel Minervassa Firenzessä. Ihastuin tyylikkääseen hotelliin ja olin onnellinen että saisin asua viehättävissä hotelleissa työmatkoilla. Kylmä herätys tuli jo seuraavan päivänä kun siirryin Milanoon. Asuin kammottavassa miinus yhden tähden hotellissa Milanon laitamilla. Kylpyhuonekin oli niin likainen, että minun piti ottaa suihku sukat jalassa...

Usually I stay in ** hotels during business trips, but few years ago a trade fair in Brussel sponsored my stay in five star hotel Royal Windsor. Good location, beautiful roms and good service. For once it was lovely to start a busy day at the fairs in luxury accommodation.

Työmatkoilla asun yleensä edullisissa parin tähden hotelleissa, mutta muutama vuosi sitten Brysselissä paikallinen messuorganisaatio maksoi majoitukseni  viiden tähden Royal Windsorissa. Hyvä sijainti, kaunit huoneet ja loistava palvelu. Kerrankin oli ihana aloittaa kiireinen messupäivä loistohotellissa.

Honorary prize

This hornorary prize from year 1955 we found in Paris Puces de Paris Saint-Ouen fleamarket. It is placed above vintage icon from Poland and my grandmoter's painting.

Tämän karjanäytteyn kunniapalkinnon vuodelta 1955 löysimme Saint-Ouenin kirpputorilta Pariisissa. Se on Puolasta osatamamme ikonin ja mummini maalaamaan muotokuvan yllä keittiötä ja olohuonetta rajaavaan pilariin kiinnitettynä.

I saw these vintage rubber glove moulds at Fishs Eddy in New York on summer 2007, but could not fit one in my hand luggage anymore, I had already bought a wooden decoy duck in Cape Cod and six big and heavy dinner plates and six small but equally heave smaller plates at Fishs Eddy. 

I still had this "hand" in my mind when we travelled again to New York next spring. They still existed, most moulds were bigger, but I can place my rings on the slender fingers and a bracelet hanging from the thumb of this mould.

I also had my eyes on a printing cylinder, but could not fit it in my hand luggage that time. Fortunately they still existed (partly forgotten under a desk, sales clercks were really suprised to see the cylinder, they did not know they had them for sale) when we (again) travelled to New York last summer. Poor Husband had the priviledge to carry home the 15 pound metal cylinder in his hand luggage... (Imagine the security check officers at JFK looking at the x-ray pictures and  listening to my esplanation what it was and what th epalnned use was for the cylinder...) It will make a lamp stand. This project has taken months, but will hopefully be ready this week.

Näin vanhoja kumihansikasmuotteja New Yorkin-matkallamme vuonna 2007 Fishs Eddy-liikkeestä, mutta sillä kertaa ne eivät mahtuneet käsimatkatavaraamme, olihan meillä jo Cape Codista ostettu puinen houkutuslintu sekä Fishs Eddystä ostetut kuusi isoa, painavaa sekä kuusi pienempää, mutta painavaa lautasta.

"Käsi" oli edelleen mielessäni kun matkasimme seuraavana  keväänä taas New Yorkiin. Muotteja oli jäljellä, suurin osa tosin oli melko isoja. Löysin kuitenkin tämän ohutsormisen muotin, jonka sormiin voin pujottaa sormuksiani ja peukalosta roikkumaan rannekorun. 

Tällä reissulla iskin silmäni metalliseen painosylinteriin, mutta se sai odottaa seuraavaa reissua. Kesällä 2009 matkasimme jälleen New Yorkiin ja hienoja painosylintereitä oli hieman unohdettuna vielä yhden myyntitiskin alla. Myyjät eivät tienneet niiden olemassaolosta... Siippa-raukka sai kunnian kantaa kotiini 7 kg painavan sylinterin käsimatkatavarassaan (kuvitelkaa turvatarkastajien ilmeet Kennedyn kentällä, kun he ihmettelivät moista kapistusta). Siitä tulee upea lampunjalka, projekti on vienyt kuukausia, mutta toivottavasti jo tällä viikolla valaisin valmistuu.
