Summer flowers

Husband buys me flowers now and then, not always for birthdays or wedding anniversaries, but mark my home coming from several days business trips or just for no special reason. This time he just wanted to bring me summer in the middle of the coldest, longest, snowiest winter we have had for decades...

My newish Panasonic camera broke down all of a sudden some days ago and  now I take pictures with my old Ixus. I used to think Ixus was a perfect little camera, but now I realize how idiot proof my Panasonic has been... It took me a dozen photos to get these two decent ones wiht the old one... can't wait to get my Panasonic back from repair.

Siippa osta minulle kukkia sillöin tällöin, ei aina syntymä- tai hääpäivinä, mutta juhlistamaan kotiinpaluutana useamman päivän työmatkoilta tai muuten vain. Tällä kertaa hän vain halusi luoda minulle kesän keskelle pisintä, kylmintä ja lumisinta talvea miesmuistiin...

Uudehko Panasonicin kamerani hajosi yllättäin mutamia päiviä sitten ja olen nyt kuvannut vanhalla Ixuksellani. Ixus oli aiemmin mielestäni täydellinen pikku  pokkari, mutta nyt huomaan kuinka idioottivarma Panasonicini on ollut... Näiden parin kohtuullisen kuvan saamiseksi otin tusinan epäonnistuneita. Tuskin maltan odottaa että saan Panasonicini takaisin huollosta.

Flower shop window

Took pictures of the new display at the local flower shop window. It was so fresh in green, white and blue shades.

Otin taas työmatkalla kuvan lähistön kukkakaupan ikkunasta, se oli niin raikkaan näköinen vihreän, valkoisen ja sinisen sävyissä.

Spring flowers

 This lovely bright, springish sight catched my eye yesterday morning on flower shop window just around the corner from my office.

Tämä ihanan keväinen näky kiinnitti katseeni ja piristi päivääni kukkakaupan ikkunassa eilen aamulla.

Orange of kumquats complemets the bright greet of little chrysanthemum flowers.

Kumkvattien oranssi sopii hyvin kirkkaanvihreiden krysanteemien kanssa yhteen.

Winter wonderland vs. Summer sweetness

I have been posting winter photos lately and written how pretty it is outdoors, but still... I am looking forward to spring and summer. Those long sunny days, light nights, warm weather. Early swims before work from the beach only few hundred meters from my house, bike trips, ice cream, coffee pauses on the beach cafe, flowers and herbs groving on my balcony, summer vacation... I hope next summer will be sunny and warm.

Olen julkaissut viime aikoina talvikuvia ja hehkuttanut kuinka kaunista ulkona on, mutta silti... Odotan jo kevättä ja kesää. Pitkiä, aurinkoisia päiviä, valoisia öitä, lämmintä säätä. Aikaisia aamu-uinteja ennen työpäivää läheisellä uimarannalla, pyöräretkiä, jäätelöä, kahvittelua uima-rannan kahvilassa, kukkia ja yrttejä kasvamassa parvekkeella, kesälomaa... Toivon ensi kesästä aurinkoista ja lämmintä.

Christmas flowers

Will go to in laws for a long weekend on Christmas Day. We bought some Christmas flowers on Saturday and I bought this for them. Helleborus was decorated with some hideous lurex bows and very unattractive angel, so I took them out; keep it simple...

It is not in full bloom yet, but stems have already grown in two days. I especially like helleborus as I had light green helleborus flowers on my wedding bouquet made of light green flowers only.

Lähdemme appivanhempien luokse pitkäksi viikonlopuksi joulupäivänä. Ostimme kotiin joulukukkia lauantaina ja ostin tämän jouluruusun heille samalla. Jouluruusu oli koristeltu rumilla hopearuseteilla ja vähemmän viehättävällä enkelillä. Nypin ne pois. Näyttää paremmalta yksinkertaisena...

Jouluruusu ei ole vielä täydessä kukassa, mutta varret ovat jo hieman kasvaneet parissa päivässä. Pidän jouluruususta kovasti, vaalean vihreitä oli morsiuskimpussanikin, joka oli tehty yksinomaan vaaleanvihreistä kukista.

Red buttercup

Bought red buttercups to celebrate the end of our 2½ month balcony renovation. Finally we get (pale November) light to our livingroom. Arranged flowers casually in clear laboratory bottles of different sizes.

Parvekeremonttimme on viimein ohi ja telineet on purettu. Olohuoneeseemme tulee taas (marraskuun kalpeaa) valoa. Sen kunniaksi ostin kimpun punaisia leinikkejä. Laitoin ne erilaisiin laboratoriopulloihin vapaamuotoiseksi asetelmaksi.

The last warrior

This little yellow flower was still fighting against fall last weekend. It was so bright in the middle of brownish grey nature...

Tämä pieni kukka taisteli kirkkaan keltaisena syksyä vastaan. Huomasin sen jo kaukaa, se loisti niin kirkkaana ruskean harmaata luontoa vasten...

Pink flowers

End August means end of summer in Finland, it's been quite warm and many flowers still bloom. Delicious colours, don't you agree.

Balcony renovation

Our house is bult in 1950, the fiftynine year old balconies have now come to the end of their use and it's time to build completely new ones. When we bought the apartment four years ago, we knew the renovation will eventually start in the next years and now it is the time. Actual work will begin on Monday, but today the beautiful old wine that climbed on the wall was taken down.

We still don't have info how long the renovation will take, but having experinced balcony renovation also in the previous house, I assume it takes about two to three months. Our living room windowns will be covered with plastic, old balconies will be taken down and new ones will be built. They will look exactly the same as the the building represents style of the 50's and changes in look are not allowed.

So, on Sunday I have to take down my balcony mini herb and flower garden and add some new lamps in the living room as it will be vey dark for the next months...

Kaisaniemi botanical garden

I visited Kaisaniemi botanical garden for the first time in years. It is right in the city center, but still I rarely go there. There is no fee for the outdoor gardens, it's pretty and compact, so it is a good place to visit for any flower loving tourist visiting Helsinki.

Orchids

Orchids are beautiful and very easy to take care of, at least the phalaenopsis orchids I have. I sometimes forget to water them for weeks and never have used any fertilizers.

My oldest orchid was a home warming gift 10 years ago, it's still going strong, blooming twice a year. In the short winter days, when all other plants seem to hibernate, at least one of my orchids is in full bloom.
